VLC broken since update in May 2018
Hello,

since the last update in early May 2018, the vlc video player does not play any more mp4 videos. The player opens, the time bar is running, but the screen stays black; no sound neither.

Is anyone aware of that bug, too?

Thanks in advance for any good advice to remedy that problem.

Best regards

Hmm... do you have all necessary packages installed?
Did the update remove something?

Did you check if changing the video output helps?

I don't know. Actually, it still worked fine by End of April. How can I check for the necessary packages?

To be honest: I click on "Alles Aktualisieren" and after that the system tells me that my system is up to date. Smile I never got any log window popping up after an update to inform me about something which was removed. If such log exists, please, where may I find that?

Again, I remind that everything worked fine by End of April. What do you mean by "changing the video output"? Actually, I expect the video to output on my monitor. Shy

Lets do a quick comparison. Those are the packages I have installed for VLC.

Code:
Package: libvlc-bin:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: libvlc5:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: libvlccore8:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-bin - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-data - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-l10n - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-base:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-fluidsynth:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-notify:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-qt:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-samba:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-skins2:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-video-output:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-video-splitter:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u1
Package: vlc-plugin-visualization:amd64 - Version: 2.2.7-1~deb9u
You can check with this command line code

Code:
dpkg -l | grep vlc | awk '{printf "Package: %s - Version: %s\n",$2,$3}'

Thats actually good. Plasma Discover will inform you and ask for permission before removing anything.

The update brought a new graphicsstack with Mesa 17.3.9 which might brought in a new hardware acceleration support for your card that is either not working on your machine or not working reliable or at all.
By switching or trying various different video output options in the VLCs settings (Einstellungen -> Video -> Ausgabe) you can see if it is working maybe with another plugin. I am using for example "OpenGL GLX xcb".
