update to 4.18.0-0.bpo.3-amd64; system won't reboot; screen brightness changes random - perhaps_not - 12-19-2018 07:07 PM

Hi. I just did a general update to my system; several new packages were installed including, it seems, 4.18.0-0.bpo.3-amd64.

After reboot I'd end up with a blank screen; no cursor; nothing.

This is a dual-boot with Windows 7 and the initial screen which allowed me to choose the OS was there.

I rebooted using 4.18.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 and everything seems fine. I am running off that now as I type this.

Code:
sudo dpkg --list | grep linux-image

gives

"ii linux-image-4.18.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 4.18.6-1~bpo9+1 amd64 Linux 4.18 for 64-bit PCs
ii linux-image-4.18.0-0.bpo.3-amd64 4.18.20-2~bpo9+1 amd64 Linux 4.18 for 64-bit PCs
ii linux-image-amd64 4.18+100~bpo9+1 amd64 Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)"

Don't know what to do or how to fix this, though.

Thanks.

I'm adding this: Screen brightness changes (increases) at random - or so it seems. This is especially bad for me as I set the brightness on the lowest level - the screen is made brighter for some unknown (to me) reason(s). I start a program - e.g. - and after it starts the screen is brighter. The little brightness box appears mid-screen and changes - even though I've not touched the brightness controls. I'd love to be able to set the screen to the minimum brightness and just have it stay there.

Also, the initial boot screen is insanely bright. I've never had this issue before. Is there a way to adjust this brightness - because when I hit the button to lower the brightness when the boot screen appears - it does nothing. It's so bright it hurts my eyes.

I don't think this is a BIOS problem as this laptop is years old and I've never had this trouble before either running Linux or Windows.

Thanks.

Seems like a debian upstream bug as they provide the newer kernel. Report your findings there please.
For the time being use the older working kernel.

I've never filed a bug report. It looks rather intimidating. When I read them it seems someone is forever screaming "this has already been filed don't waste our time" and things like that.

I will continue using the old kernel.

Hello, I confirm some problems after updates: screen remains black. I can start the system selecting the 4.17 kernel in recovery mode...
