As an "old timer", I go way back in the pc world. I started out with CP/M as my primary operating system on a Kaypro portable. I have literary worked with every version of DOS, Windows, even a revolutionary OS (for those of you that remember) called PICK. I even remember when AT&T produced a line of PC's with Unix Sys V. I also worked with a number of consumer home products (PC's) of various configurations. I loved computing but didn't get caught up in the OS bashing wars that has proliferated over the decades.

In the mid 1980's when PC clones were everywhere, I was able to spend a lot of time with the original MacIntosh my father used in his business.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I believe that ALL operation systems are good. So when I first discovered the BeOS, I was fascinated. I committed myself to experimenting with it as it progressed into a really nice project. When it finally was usuable, I purchased BeOS Pro version 5.1 and STILL have the distribution cd to this day.

AS almost everyone else on any given Linux forum, I have tried countless Linux distributions, mostly well liked, and some not so nice.

BUT.................when I saw your release post on Distrowatch that stated it uses elements of the BeOS desktop, I immediately found the torrent and will download it later tonight.

Listen to a user that has literally worked thousands of hours on pc systems in three decades. If you implement the original (or close proximation) BeOS desktop environmnet, get ready for a swell of user support in the Linux community like you have never seen!

Most Linux distros are boring! Hybrid OS distros are awesome and exciting!

The less you implement the "same old Linux standby's", the more successful you will be.

I, for one, will follow your OS very closely, as a dedicated and proud user, and as a constructive critic. Please believe me when I state that I am NOT finding fault with your development team in any way. I wanted you to remember that people who REALLY LOVE COMPUTING want to stand outside the crowd.

"We want to be shepherds, not the sheep!"

PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW YOUR OS TO BECOME JUST ANOTHER LINUX DISTROBUTION!

I am calling out all regular Linux users to download and use this distro. Let's help the development process and give our FULL support. Get your friends involved. Let's change the current Linux landscape and create the best desktop environment that is free from OS bashing and computer hype.

Respectfully and Sincerely,

sasdthoh
I'll certainly go along with all you say sasdthoh.

I also still have my BEOS stuff and loads of spinoffs etc that followed!

I think that Zevenos has actually achieved a very difficult and tricky balance of blending all the visuals of BEOS with the 21stC Ubuntu. There are so many YAB's about (yet another buntu). This is not one of those - it has had some serious work and attention to detail that is lacking in many of the yawnworthy respins.

The choice of software may not be to every taste, but again it reflects the character of the BEOS offerings. If I have any criticism it is that the naming of the apps in the menus falls short of what could have been done to maintain the illusion. OK that's easily fixed in Gnome but not quite so easy in XFCE yet.

It's nice to see Sawfish configurator screens again too - so flexible!

Well done to the Zevenos team - I hope to see your name rising up the Distrowatch listings.

Thanks for the feedback Smile
Hi,

I have to admit that I have no idea what BEOS is, but I grabbed the torrent and like how it looks. Hopefully the standard madwifi method will work to get my wireless running.
It should work fine Wink
I'm 100% down for this OS. I'm a long time BeOS enthusiast and honestly--merging usability and interface of BeOS with stability of Linux is A GREAT IDEA.

Small note to graphics team: THANK YOU FOR STICKING TO ORIGINAL (or close to) ARTWORK AND DESIGN. Please keep it as close to BeOS and do not re-design it. Icons look great, applications look very well-integrated, everything looks like it has a general gui guidelines--that's very good. So please, please, please: don't make the artwork any more prettier because it's great as is!

Thank you!

Hello to Alex and all,
My oldest son told me of Zeven. I took no notice. Then an old friend of mine (jjcb) -- a veteran of IBM, the early days of DOS development, and coding for IBM's Warp who has used virtually every marketed OS in the English-speaking world, -- called me and spoke of ZevenOS as he uses it frequently. I knew I had to try it as my son and friend both liked it so much.

Like them and sasdthot, I too must say that most Linux OS are tediously the same. GNOME, KDE, XFCE are about all you can choose from - and that is not a knock against any of them bu against the lack of imagination, indeed slavishness, by which the vast majority of distributions fall into the 'GUI line' that is tedious. Granted there are some brands working hard to perfect Enlightenment, Openbox Fluxbox etc., but they are few and very far between.

After trying 44 Linux distributions in three years, only 7 have 'made the grade' and have a lpartition on my laptop's hard drive -- ZevenOS is one of them. One treat of retirement is that I spend each day with a different OS in rotation -- just for the fun of it. I also get to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each in comparison to others. Zeven OS is fun. It's looks are fresh, I love the yellow, MAGI, etc and hope that you will continue to keep the look, feel and colors exactly as you have in 1.1. All you need cosmetically to put a real polish to Zeven is a yellow-colored graphically interesting boot screen and some nice wallpapers. Keep up the great work! I will stop by now and again in the days where I use ZevenOS. If I can be of help, please tell me how as I have a Major in English and could perhaps help with any English needs Zeven development team may have.

With praise, gratitude and hope for the future of ZevenOS,
Dr.P. Venkmann (ret.)

HI buddy
it was nice feed back.it seems like you observing too much.Keep doing that will help in forum improvement..
I'm an old timer like the OP, and ZevenOS is one of the few that I really like, or appreciate, how it's conceived and put together....I'm also a pragmatist, so stability is key. Building on an Xubuntu base, but going beyond simply retheming, puts me in the camp. Cheers to ZevenOS! Smile
