ZevenOS with dynamic Deskbar
Allgemein February 8th, 2010Since ZevenOS 2.0 the Deskbar has a static menu. This has some advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is a clear structured menu that does not become confusing if installing many applications. The disadvantage is that normally you need to go to the appfinder to find newly installed applications. We now implemented a new static menu that lets you manually create a dynamic menu based on freedesktop.org .desktop files.
NOTICE: Please read the following before you install the update.
This update will enable the dynamic menu automatically. This needs to be configured before working properly.
If you want to enable the old static menu :
If you want to have the old static menu again just rename the hidden .deskbar_newmenu file in your home folder into .deskbar_menustatic.

It will allow you to create categories by placing a directory in the hidden folder .menu (in your home folder). Any .desktop file from /usr/share/applications can now be placed in the menu very easily.

The new deskbar feature as well as some patches will be automatically obtained by packagemanager on update.
If you want to have the old static menu again just rename the hidden .deskbar_newmenu file in your home folder into .deskbar_menustatic.

In the next release, I’d like to see an option to attach/detach the menu to the Deskbar just like in good old BEOS. And of course the most frequently used applications could be moved directly into the Deskbar.

Question about the new Deskbar dynamic menu: how is a directory created and how are applications from usr/share/application moved into the menu?

Create a directory .menu in your home folder.
Copy the links from /usr/share/applications to ~/.menu/
If you want to create a submenu, like Multimedia, just create a folder ~/.menu/Multimedia and put your multimedia apps in there.
The menu displays every folder and Freedesktop.desktop compliant files.
