Neptune 3.0 “Brotkasten” Release is ready
Allgemein 10:55 AMThe Neptune team is proud to announce the release of Neptune 3.0 “Brotkasten”.
We worked very hard and spend a lot of effort in creating this release. So if you like it please consider donating to us a small amount of money so we can further develop and strenghtens our efforts.
You can donate via paypal:
This release features the linux kernel 3.8.4 and is exclusively meant to run on 64bit CPUs. We switched the Debian base from testing to wheezy to provide a more stable and better experience. The KDE Plasma Desktop ships with version 4.10.1. Chromium was updated to version 25, Icedove to version 10.0.12ESR, Gimp 2.8.2, Kdenlive 0.9.4, Amarok 2.7, VLC 2.0.5. We ship with the latest and greates multimedia codecs preinstalled aswell as the flashplayer. For wireless diagnosis we ship Wireshark, Aircrack-ng and kismon.
We put a lot of effort in adding new features and fixing lots of bugs.
The Neptune Installer now comes with a summary page allowing you to see a summary of the installation options aswell as allowing you to change the language and localization of your system right from within the installer (the new language-selector tool can be called after installation aswell). We also added a new advanced installation mode the Nested Installation.
Thanks to our competition in creating Kdenlive title templates we were able to put lots of cool and new title templates into this release.
The ZevenOS-Hardwaremanager was updated to be more polished and to allow even the installation of experimental proprietary graphicsdrivers (from the debian experimental repository).
The artwork of Neptune 3.0 was modified aswell and for the first time also uses a custom sound theme aswell as a customized mouse cursor theme. We optimized the font rendering and turned font hinting on by default.

Lancelot new default launchermenu
The new default launchermenu to open up applications has been switched to lancelot which allows you to use all the great krunner plugins in the integrated search aswell as offering a better overview of installed applications and a clickless navigation.

“ZevenOS 5.0, a Xubuntu-based desktop Linux …”
Unsure as to why you did not have ZevenOS 6+, as your newest 64 bit, advance distro.
The only reason I tried ‘buntu-based distros, is that it seems to have better hardware detection, better upgrade possibilities, especially in regards to software from 3rd party sources.
Occasionally I read distro developers comments about the ‘buntus being unstable, compared to the more trusted, less advanced Debian distros. Is that why you did not (yet) release the new ZevenOS ??

¥~ THX ~¥
I really am a fan of this Distribution, and I do not know why… Oo
…hardly ever really used it, because there’s always something
not working. Guess I really like the choice of out-of-the-box
software/system, and your ‘calmness’, leszek, your ideology. 🙂
/\ll in /\ll the “ENergY” about this Distro.
…it’s driving me crazy with strange&stupid errors…
~what’s not working now is network-connections, which is quite
normal with most distros on this Lenovo G580 (Atheros AR8162 LAN
and Broadcom 4313 WLAN [wl driver]).
It was!!, because with the dawn of the 3.8 Kernel, it seems the
ALX driver for the lan-adapter got finally implemented in the
kernel. Guess what? -it is not in the neptune-kernel… :{
~~~
Well, finally wanna say ‘Hello!’ to you… really apprechiate your
efforts and commitment.
I will talk to our kernel dev maybe he can enable this driver in his next kernel build
I am getting identicle md5sum from both direct down and torrent but neither match the one on the website:
md5sum Neptune3.iso
Wednesday March 27th, 2013 at 06:20 AM
Hi, is the md5 sum on the download page correct?
I downloaded the iso two times and every time I got a different md5 sum from yours.
Thank you very much.
Wednesday March 27th, 2013 at 06:50 AM
We will investigate this thanks for reporting
Wednesday March 27th, 2013 at 07:01 AM
We updated the md5sum. Someone just forgot updating the md5 placeholder. The correct one can be always found by typing in the url to the iso plus a .md5 at the end. So this here should be the correct md5sum: http://www.proindi.de/zevenos/ZevenOS-Neptune/Neptune3.iso.md5
Wednesday March 27th, 2013 at 07:02 AM
You were right. We just forgot to update the md5sum on the page. Your ISOs are correct.
bugs- skype multi-arch .deb says wrong architecture cannot install.
after installing google-talk plugin all sorts of lock ups and errors.
could not find an installation for flash player for iceweasel.
Wednesday March 27th, 2013 at 03:02 PM
Skype is a 32-Bit only application. For it to install successfully activate Multiarch with
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
first and then try to install the skype.debFor the Flashplayerplugin execute
sudo ln -s /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
. Thanks for reporting this bug. The flashplayer bug will be fixed with a new package very soon.Hope that helps.
@comment nr 3:
The Atheros LAN should work out of the box. Also the Broadcom OpenSource driver is enabled and should work without any problems with all supported chipsets.
We did not use a clean kernel from kernel.org.
When you mean, that the driver is been there since version X, then please show me the commitment of the driver you need on kernel.org and i would check everything.
I am trying to create a live usb, using the installer package unetbootin-neptune-linux. I am unable to change permissions to make it executable.
I am using Lubuntu 12.10.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, aarn
Saturday March 30th, 2013 at 11:37 AM
Have you tried the command
chmod +x /path/to/unetbootin-neptune-linux
to make it executable ?Then executing it via the terminal
cd /path/to/; ./unetbootin-neptune-linux
Try executing it from the terminal
Ich bin begeistert!!! Endlich ein KDE mit einem funktionierenden Soundsystem ohne Pulseaudio. Es war immer ein nervenaufreibendes Spiel die 5.1 Anlage einzurichten und nie sind die Einstellungen standhaft gewesen. Jedesmal verstellten sich die Lautstärkeregler in einem wirren Zusammenspiel. Hier läuft alles perfekt von Anfang an 🙂 Kmix ist toll…ohne Pulseaudio! Top!
Nur der ‘Firefox’ bzw. Iceweasel fehlt mir und nach der Installation startet dieser nicht. Audacious ist auch schon installiert und läuft prima! Ich glaube nach nun 2h hab ich Grund im System und freue mich. Neptun wird wohl mein neues Standardsystem. Ein Dank an euch 🙂
I tried multiple times writng the iso to a USB thumb drive with unetbootin becuase I don’t like wasting DVDs and was unable to get it to boot. When I boot the thumb drive it just hangs on syslinux. Is there an issue with doing this or is it just me?
Tuesday April 2nd, 2013 at 03:37 AM
Have you tried it with our modified unetbootin called Usb Live creator ?
Tuesday April 2nd, 2013 at 12:01 PM
leszek : I tried your modified unetbootin from windows, but is of no use, it do not even run in windows. Can’nt say about linux one. Perhaps I will give a try to Linux Live usb creator.
Since I like firefox, I tried to install it manually. But it looks totally awkward in KDE and only after installing gtk3-oxygen package, it looks just a bit better. Can Firefox be added in repo just like Linux Mint Debian. Neptune is running fine in my virtual box, but when I install it on harddrive, something or the other starts giving me trouble e.g. sound, network etc. But having said that Neptune KDE is looking very good. In fact damn good.
Hello again Leszek,
thanks for suggestions re. navigating to unetbootin-neptune-linux BUT I guess there is no associated GUI?
I am a slow-learner of linux, unable to thus far find a forum answer to a question such as “how to execute unetbootin in terminal”.
Cheers, AA
Wednesday April 3rd, 2013 at 08:45 AM
There is of course a GUI for both the Windows and Linux version. Just mark the file under linux as executable. On Windows doubleclick the exe. If you need further help with this I would suggest creating account on the forum and asking there.
Wednesday April 3rd, 2013 at 01:09 PM
Hello again Leszek,
thx again for suggestions, but I suspect the problem lies with lubuntu, rather than neptune…
I will wait for Neptune4.
Cheers, AA
Wednesday April 3rd, 2013 at 02:31 PM
As I am also a dev of lubuntu. What problem do you think is there with lubuntu ?
A bulletproof version on lubuntu to successfully execute the unetbootin-neptune-linux would be going with the filemanager (pcmanfm) into that directory where it was downloaded to. Hitting F4 to open up the terminal and typing in
chmod +x unetbootin-neptune-linux
And then executing it with the command
./unetbootin-neptune-linux
Waiting will take a long time as we don’t plan to release a new version this spring.
Friday April 5th, 2013 at 07:27 PM
Leszek : If I install anything from Muon Package Manager, it says : “The following piece of software cannot be verified. WARNING: Installing unverified software represents a security risk, as the presence of unverifiable software can be a sign of tampering. Do you wish to continue?” While all the settings are default. Is it ok?
Also as I said earlier sound was not working on hard disk installation, while it was working in live mode. After reading some debian post and reconfiguring pulseaudio it started working. Configured the network manually now it is working.
Now I am truly enjoying Neptune OS. Hope, if I face any problem, I can report here. Lastly have to install it from linux live usb creator. Your unetbootin for windows started running, but it gives errors while booting the os.
Friday April 5th, 2013 at 07:43 PM
This seems to be an error of muon as the keys are already installed and should work fine if you are using apt-get from the command line.
We don’t ship pulseaudio so this can’t be the source of the problem. The only thing that I can imagine is that the sound was simply muted within alsas mixer.
We have tested the usb live creator successfully on windows and linux here. So what error did you get exactly.
Would you mind telling us more in our forum ?
Is steam in the repository?
Saturday April 6th, 2013 at 04:49 PM
Steam is not in the repository.
Thursday April 18th, 2013 at 05:14 PM
Ja also, wenn das Ding mit was anderem als KDE ausgeliefert werden würde, so würde ich mir Nepune 3 gerne auf Platte verewigen. Aber seid mir nicht böse, ich kann mit KDE einfach nicht warm werden.
Hast du dir Neptune denn wenigstens mal angeschaut ?
Falls nicht mach das mal. Ansonsten gibt es ja genügend Alternativen und niemand hindert dich daran auch unter Neptune einen eigenen Desktop zu installieren.
Thursday April 18th, 2013 at 07:13 PM
@leszek
Bin grade noch am downloaden. Und ja, du hast recht was hindert einen daran xfce oder sonst was nach zu installieren. 🙂
Bin mal gespannt ob ich dann den Nvidia Treiber für die Geforce 6150 Go in meinem etwas betagten Nb. wieder zum Laufen bringe.
Unter den aktuellen Buntus und Mints endet das im Fiasko.
Sehr schön gelungene Distri. Hübsch anzusehen. Leider sind die Pakete schon sehr angestaubt. Debian halt.
Very nice distribution. pretty to look at
Unfortunately, the software packages are very dusty (old).
Friday April 19th, 2013 at 11:10 AM
Welche Pakete meinst du denn ? KDE SC wird mit Version 4.10.2 ausgeliefert und KDEnlive und Amarok in den neusten Versionen. (Alles im Repo updatebar. Das ISO selbst ist natürlich etwas älter)
